Magazine Project: ROOTED

Sketches:

Description:
Design a magazine cover and spread for the first edition of BYU-I’s newest magazine.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles):
I began this project by brainstorming possible layouts which would emulate the universities purpose. After I drew up possible layouts, I finalized a layout. Once I had a general idea of where I wanted the design to go, I went and took pictures of scenes that would flow with the devotional talk I chose to use. After I took the pictures, I used Adobe Photoshop to edit them with the four edits: vibrance, selective color, levels, and sharpening.  To create my magazine, I used InDesign. From classroom critique, I changed the flow of the magazine, making it more cohesive with the purpose of the devotional talk. In Adobe InDesign, I used various tools to accomplish the design, such as the layer tool, the shape builder tool, and paragraph styles. I used the principles of alignment, repetition, and contrast in my design. The mustard yellow/orange color and the grey color was repeated throughout the brochure; the pictures are of similar styles; lastly, the color of the title of the magazine and the grey background was achieved using the eyedropper tool and selecting colors from the photos.

Message:
Rooted is a magazine for BYU-I.

Audience:

Anyone who loves BYU-I and enjoys reading the uplifting messages found in devotional talks.

Top Thing Learned:

The layout in InDesign is crucial when going to print. Also, if you line up your documents correctly, you will be able to print off the magazine in one shot.

Web Page Mockup: Brush Prairie Raw Honey

Description:

Design a website homepage using a grid.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS Principles):

I began this project by brainstorming possible layouts which would emulate the company’s purpose. After I drew up three possible layouts, all of them different from each other, I decided and finalized one layout. Once I had a general idea of where I wanted the design to go, I used Adobe Illustrator to create a wire frame with a grid system used for alignment. From the classroom critique, and talking to Brother Rognon, I changed the colors, placement, the overall look of the website’s homepage. In Adobe Illustrator, I used various tools to accomplish the design, such as the layer tool, the shape builder tool, and the masking tool. I used the principles of alignment, repetition, and contrast in my design. The mustard yellow/orange color and hexagonal design were repeated throughout the three designs; the pictures are of similar styles; lastly, the color of the hexagon and the navigation bar/footer were achieved using the eyedropper tool and selecting colors from the photos.

Business Identity: Brush Prairie Raw Honey

Description:
Design a logo, letterhead and business card for a company using Adobe Illustrator.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles):
I began this project by brainstorming possible companies to design a logo for, whether the company was made up or real. After I decided that I was going to design a logo for my parent’s honey business, Brush Prairie Raw Honey, I began sketching out a plan. Once I had a general idea of where I wanted the logo design to go, I used Adobe Illustrator to create the three different logos. From the classroom critique, and talking to Brother Rognon, I changed the colors, placement, the overall shape of the bee. In Adobe Illustrator, I used various tools to accomplish the design of the logo. I used the principles of alignment, repetition, and contrast in my design. The mustard yellow and hexagonal design were repeated throughout the three designs; the information on the business card and letterhead were both aligned with objects on the page to create a natural flow; lastly, the color of the hexagon and the bee were contrasting colors.

Montage

caitlynudymontage

Description:
Design an inspirational poster montage for a non-profit Christian organization using images and type.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles):
I began this project by searching for a quote or phrase to use, which could be illustrated and explained through a montage of pictures. After I found several quotes that were truly inspirational and would fit the theme, I decided to go with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. that talked about faith. I found three pictures from Unsplash, all of which were used to create the montage. In Adobe Photoshop, I used layers, a variety of masking, the brush tool to blend the clouds into the steps, and text to incorporate the quote. I used the principles of alignment, repetition, and contrast in my design. The light and text are both aligned with the top marble; the color of the text was achieved through taking the eye dropper tool and selecting a burnt-orange color from the light fixture to create repetition and contrast against the blue/white clouds.

Message:
Faith is an action when you’re in a position where the entire picture is not visible.

Audience:

Anyone who believes in or has an understanding of faith

Top Thing Learned:

The position of the text inversely has an effect on the entire design, as well as the color of the text.

Title Font Name & Category:
Used on words “faith” and “staircase”
Letter Gothic Std Medium//Sans Serif

Copy Font Name & Category:
Used on the rest of the quote
